The GLS Inspires Movement of Peace in a Once Notoriously Crime-Ridden Region

Leaders light candles at the GLS in the Philippines

After attending The Global Leadership Summit in 2015, a group of pastors and leaders in the Philippines decided to adopt a local region notorious for terrorism and crime and help develop and transform the culture into one of peace.

They banded together and prayed for the region of Mindanao. For several years they prayed earnestly for God’s guidance. And one day, one of the pastors in the group was voted into the local government as chairman.

What was once known as a red-coded area, became an area where many people were surprised to see transformation.

When he became chairman, this group of pastors conducted many values-based Bible studies with the local government. And things began to change. What was once known as a red-coded area, became an area where many people were surprised to see transformation—more people began getting involved in peacemaking.

Eventually the pastors convinced more than 200 rebels, who had once been part of terrorizing the region, to submit themselves to the government. As a result, many lives have been changed and churches have been planted.

“Let’s keep praying for Mindanao to be a land of promise and a culture of peace,” said Pastor Nas Silava in Mindanao. “And pray we can see this grander vision spread all over the country. Thank you so much for praying for us!”

“I also am so proud and happy for this team,” said Chris Torres, GLS regional producer for east and west Asia. “They just had one of their best GLS events ever in their five years of holding the GLS. They saw a greater reach and impact. A lot of opportunities to share the GLS have opened up for them.”

Malcolm Gladwell on The Tortoise & The Hare— GLS21 Faculty Spotlight

Malcolm Gladwell will be speaking at Global Leadership Summit 2021.

We couldn’t be more excited to welcome Malcolm Gladwell to The Global Leadership Summit stage in 2021. Recognized as one of the 100 most influential people by TIME magazine and one of the Foreign Policy’s top global thinkers, Gladwell is a world-renowned, five-time best-selling author and sought-after thought leader delivering expertise and practical application on management, innovation, history and leadership.

There is much to learn from Malcolm Gladwell, especially when it comes to his expertise around the topic of leadership. As you anticipate learning from Malcolm at The Global Leadership Summit this August, enjoy a preview of his masterful storytelling and insight in one of our favorite podcast episodes from Malcolm’s widely popular podcast, Revisionist History.

In this episode, The Tortoise & The Hare, Malcolm draws you in, takes you on a journey to re-look at people’s obsession with speed as a measure of intelligence or aptitude. Looking particularly at the LSAT and exams in law school, Malcolm examines this obsession, its wide-ranging (and often contradictory) ramifications and some ideas of how to change it. So much of the LSAT—the hurdle to get into the best law schools—is about speed: how fast you can complete the answers. Yet, the requirement for being a good lawyer has little—if anything—to do with speed. It’s about being meticulous and paying attention to detail.

53 Youth Events & 5,000 Emerging Leaders Inspire Ripple Effect of Positive Change

Youth GLS19 attendees look over notes

When God inspires someone through The Global Leadership Summit, the results can be dramatic.

When this happens in the life of a young person, the results can be life changing.

This truth has been played out countless times through the Youth GLS around the world, and this was certainly evidenced in the story of Bui Van Phong.

Biu Phong - Vietnam GLS20Phong is a young man from Vietnam who struggled with drug addiction. But when he came to faith, he not only found freedom in his new relationship with Jesus, but he found freedom from his addiction to drugs. He then wondered what God had in store for his life.

“About 30% of the people in my hometown are addicted to drugs or take part in drugs,” Phong recently shared during a break at the Ho Noi Youth GLS.

During the event, Phong believes God revealed to him a grander vision for his life. “People from my village have witnessed the changes happening to me thanks to God, so I am going to share my story to help them. Like Craig Groeschel said, a story is more powerful than facts. I want to save them from this misery by spreading God’s love and words to them.”

Around the world, God has been using the Youth GLS to impact the lives of young people like Bui Van Phong. In fact, as The Global Leadership Summit was taken across the global during the 2019-2020 season, there were 53 Youth GLS events around the world with more than 15,000 young people participating. In every case, lives and communities have been impacted in remarkable ways.

In Nairobi, Kenya, a high school teacher had attended the GLS several years ago and believed that it should be made available to young people in their city. Working with our team in Kenya, she introduced the Youth GLS to her high school. The impact on the students became so widely known, that within three years the Youth GLS had been picked up by ten Nairobi high schools, including three Muslim schools.

In 2020 plans were in place for a Youth GLS in India, but when the pandemic hit, those plans had to be reevaluated. “We simply decided to use a digital platform,” said Binu Varghese, GLS director in India. “Young people are already very comfortable using digital technology, and we believed they would respond well.”

You do not know how encouraging the Summit and the messages are for me.

And respond they did. When the digital Youth GLS was held in India in January 2021, nearly 5,000 young people took part.

In every part of the world the Youth GLS is impacting young people and inspiring a grander vision for their lives. From India to Australia, from Kenya to Vietnam, and in more and more countries around the world—the Youth GLS is a movement building momentum.

As Bui Van Phong concluded, “You do not know how encouraging the Summit and the messages are for me. Now I am going to continue my mission and dream.”

Regain Energy with One Simple Question
ARVE Error: Mode: lazyload not available (ARVE Pro not active?), switching to normal mode

I want to teach you a powerful exercise called “laddering up”. This is a purposeful way of creating a positive daydream about your professional contribution to the world. It centers around the repeated question, “What is the best possible outcome of that?”

I’ll give you a corporate example, a personal example and a nonprofit example.

“What is the best possible outcome of that?”

Corporate: Let’s say you’re a manager of a sales team and you’re writing a new manual for a health food company.

  • Ask yourself, what’s the best possible outcome of that? We’d have a more organized sales team.
  • And what’s the best possible outcome of that? The sales team would close more deals.
  • And what’s the best possible outcome of that? Our company would grow and expand.
  • And the best possible outcome of that is more people would eat healthy, delicious food.
  • And the best outcome of that is that is people would live longer, healthier lives.

Bingo! That’s the top of the ladder! What you see at the top of the ladder is the image that will inspire you.

Personal: Let’s say I’m getting up at five in the morning to do a podcast interview about Zoom effectiveness. Am I truly inspired? I need to ladder up.

  • I need to ask, what is the best possible outcome of that? People everywhere would be on less Zoom calls every day.
  • And what is the best possible outcome of that? They would have more time for meaningful work and the workday would end earlier.
  • And what is the best possible outcome of that? They would have time for leisure and time with family.
  • And what is the best possible outcome of that? Close, connected, loving families.

Can I get up for close, connected, loving families? You bet I can.

When you bring images of best possible outcomes to your mind, they fortify and fuel your body.

Nonprofit: When we’re in a giving organization it seems like the laddering up should be obvious, but sometimes we stay in the present and forget. Let’s say you work for a water charity and you’re working on the donor page for the website.

  • You ask yourself, what is the best possible outcome of that? More donations.
  • And what is the best possible outcome of that? All of our programs would be fully funded.
  • And what is the best possible outcome of that? We would build more wells everywhere.
  • And what is the best possible outcome of that? Children drinking clear, clean, close-by water.

When you bring images of best possible outcomes to your mind, they fortify and fuel your body.

It’s like imagining your work as a feel-good movie. This exercise brings you to the last scene—the one where the music swells beneath it and you get goosebumps. If you connect with this end result, if you watch the end of that movie, I promise you it will infuse you with energy you didn’t know you had.

Be gentle. Be optimistic. Ladder up. And until then, I hope to see you very soon at The Global Leadership Summit on August 5-6, 2021!
